If you ever get the chance to see Flann OMalley pull all of his punches on stage at Air Sex, not much is left to the imagination as to what happens with him behind the bedroom. The Bellingham contestant holds no move back when impressing judges and audiences, and he is set to perform at the SXSW show here in Austin. Let’s get to know the man behind the libido!

How did you get into Air Sex?
I worked at a music venue in my hometown of Bellingham, WA called the Nightlight Lounge. We brought the Air Sex National Tour here and I thought it was a funny/cool idea, so I participated. Many of my friends said, “Wow, it’s like someone went out and designed a contest just for you.”
Where has the Air Sex Tour brought you?
I won my hometown contest and was flown out for the 2009 World Championships in Austin. It was my first time in Austin and I fell in love with the place, it rocks uncompromisingly. My friend had been filming a documentary about my band and the music scene in my hometown, and he decided to document my whole Air Sex experience as well. Air Sex gave the film an amazing subplot that we think has turned our documentary from a good one into a great one. Also, I was interviewed and given a full page story in the Western Washington University newspaper “The Western Front”. It contained some funny pictures and content that has brought me some enjoyable notoriety in Bellingham.
What do you expect from this SXSW show?
We just completed our first version of the documentary “American Rockstar”. This show is a “sneak peek” screening party at The New Movement for friends of ours that either live in Austin or will be there for the SXSW festivities (or anyone else that shows up). Our plan is to get a keg of Lonestar, do some improv comedy with one of Austin’s rising stars, Chris Trew, and then watch American Rockstar, (clap clap clap clap) deep in the heart of Texas.
What is the strangest thing I’ve seen during a competition?

During the 2009 Championships I had a giant penis cannon that was designed to shoot tapioca 40 feet over the crowd break or “go limp” on me while I was screwing a huge vagina curtain. That was a strange and unfortunate happening for me. But, I’d say the strangest and most funny thing I’ve seen was during an Air Sex Preliminary competition I hosted at the Nightlight in January. My couch crasher, who has aspergers syndrome, participated and wowed the audience with his very slow and methodical air cunnilinigus and eventual slothish air intercourse. He made it to the finals but was too distracted by the other contestants to get “in the zone” and take the title. It was a sight to behold.

Fanatic Feature: The Man Behind Dan Rumney

Maybe you’ve seen him around The New Movement from time to time, performing as a part of The Megaphone show. You may have laughed at his witty remarks while improvising at The Shootaround. You might even know the man. But most people don’t know the real Dan Rumney, underneath the layers and collared shirts. Let’s meet the improviser!

First off, how did you first get involved with TNM?

I used to drive up and down Chicon every day, driving my fiancee to school. I would drive past this building with a big megaphone on it and decided to find out what it is. When it turned out to be a comedy theatre with improv classes, I decided it was time to finally take classes.

Were you trained at any other conservatories before you joined TNM?

I was not. I’d considered taking classes with UCB when we lived in New York, but never got round to it. Lame anecdote, huh?

What is next for you in the world of comedy?

Next is ‘Ghost Prom’. Ghost Prom is the most exciting thing to ever come out of East Austin. Ever. We are an improv troupe from The New Movement; we’re currently in rehearsals, getting to know each other and how we improvise together. All I can tell you at the moment is to watch… this… space…
Besides improv, I’m interested in performing in some of the sketches that are coming out of the writing class.

Now the big question: What does Dan Rumney find funny?

I’m a big fan of British satire: The Thick of It, The Day Today, I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue. Since moving to America, though, I’ve been introduced to some great stuff that I was totally unaware of in the UK: Christopher Guest movies, Arrested Development, The Daily Show. All that… and puns

Like Dennis Rodman, Chris is as bad as he wants to be

Unlike Dennis Rodman, Chris Trew (TNM’s co-founder) is having heated and VERY SERIOUS message board interactions over on the ole Oxygen Network Bad Girls Club forums.

You see, it all started last summer when Chris made his rounds about the U.S. hosting The Air Sex World Championships Tour. The tour got some fun and notable press and caught the roving eye of the folks over at Oxygen’s Bad Girls Club. So, a few months after the tour Chris and the Air Sex crew were asked to head on over to L.A. to host an Air Sex competition in which the gals of the B.G.C. would participate. That all happened, they filmed it for an episode and history was made.

Last week episode 1 (of 2, we believe) of the Air Sex appearances aired with some delightful surprises. For example, Chris looks way different on TV.

…and…

As fun as making that discovery was, the most valuable discovery is swiftly becoming the wealth of opinionated and attentive message board goers this Oxygen gem has produced. As of post time, there were 12 pages of inspired discussions, astute character analysis and animated debates over which Chris Trew is lording with the selfless detachment we have all come to appreciate in his art.

Dan French’s Saturday Standup

Next Saturday March 6 from 12 – 3 pm, Dan French will be teaching Fundamentals of Standup at his studio, 8910 Pointer Lane. This is the introductory class that qualifies you to join the ongoing Development Workshops that Dan holds weekly. This is the same class where you collaborate with Dan and other comics to come up with a cohesive, professional-level improv set. Useful and funny!

For those of you who don’t yet know, the sketch comedy class at TNM has been working hard over the last few weeks to tie the loose ends of the first ever sketch comedy show put together by students of the theater! Students started from square one, and are in the final stages of putting the show together this week. Without giving too much away- be prepared to learn a little history, how to land your dream job, and how to join one of the most prestigious clubs in the world (well, since third grade, anyway.) Come see what we can do! Shows are this Friday and Saturday at 9:30, and next Tuesday at 8:30. You can buy sketch comedy tickets here!

We back from VideoCamp!

We’re still sky high from VideoCamp today, which thanks to the organizers went off oh so nicely. Not only were we part of the learnin’ crowd but we were also one of a dozen or so presenters. Our presentation was about (ahem)…improv!
