TAKING IT PERSONALLY: Emotional Vulnerability as a Foundation in Long Form Improvisation w/Rob Belushi
DATE/TIME: 12-2p Sunday, April 30th
PRICE: $45

At the core of Improvisation is the idea, ʺtogether we can build something more interesting than I can write on my own.ʺ In this workshop we will look at the importance of emotional resonance in our improv, using a foundation of vulnerability as a means to discovering truly unique scene work that is more satisfying to the audience, but more importantly, to us as artists. The day will be focused around the idea of ʺlosingʺ in the scene, as opposed to winning, or being funny or sounding smart–the focus will revolve around ʺexposure.ʺ We will investigate what it means to expose ourselves to each other, and the audience and further our ability to make choices with impact as well as humor, as opposed to another scene with two priests riding a space pickle, or whatever. The idea that there is a ʺrightʺ choice is sometimes instinctual and leads us to an attitude of control in our scenes, and in this workshop we will try less to ʺcreate,ʺ and more to deal with what is already right in front of us on stage.

Originally from Chicago, Rob began his career in the Chicago improv and theater scene, most notably as an alum of the famed Second City.. Rob was memorable in twenty spots for the Gatorade “Sweat-It-To-Get-It” campaign opposite NFL stars Peyton and Eli Manning, Cam Newton and JJ Watt. His TV credits include recurring roles on BALLERS (HBO), CHICAGO PD (NBC), THE MENTALIST (CBS), AGENTS OF SHIELD (ABC), HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER (CBS), THE GOODWIN GAMES (FOX). Rob graduated with an Honors B.A. in Film Studies from Wesleyan University (CT) and is a School at Steppenwolf alum. He has been a teacher for Second City since 2008 and can next be seen as the lead on ABC Digital’s THE OFF SEASON, or touring comedy festivals in his two-person improv group “Sheldon.”

Our improv and sketch class sessions consist of 8 weekly, 2 hour sessions, and a recital show performed in front of an audience.

New class sessions start all the time; at $225 each. Ideally, students continue in the same time slot from Level 1 onward, but if you need to switch to another time or need more info about our Level 2-Level 5 classes or internships, please contact TNM’s Conservatory Director (Nola – TNMNOLA@gmail.com, ATX – TNMATX@gmail.com).

We also offer sketch writing classes, team building workshops for businesses and corporations, week-long and weekend intensives, and kids and teen comedy classes.

To reserve your spot in class, a deposit of at least half of your tuition is due before the first day of class. The remainder of your tuition is due by the third class of your current level. If you need to discuss a payment plan, email the Conservatory Director for your city (ATX – TNMATX@gmail.com, Nola – TNMNola@gmail.com), and they will consider your request on a case-by-case basis. We offer a variety of fun internships for half-price tuition, so please inquire at the email addresses above if interested.

We accept payment for classes via http://paypal.me/thenewmovement, Venmo (username: TheNewMovement), or you can leave checks/cash with your teacher @ TNM.

All refund requests must be in writing. Students seeking a refund or a partial refund, should send an e-mail to the Conservatory Director as soon as they have decided to withdraw. Each refund request will be processed within 30 days of such request. Refunds may be issued for courses upon student withdrawal under the following provisions:

8 Week Courses
– A full refund of deposit/tuition (minus a $25 processing fee) is available only when withdrawal notification is received by noon (12pm) three business days prior to the start of the course. For example, refund requests for a Monday night class must be received by Wednesday at noon. Requests for Saturday or Sunday classes would have to be received by Tuesday at noon.
– For withdrawal after the start of the first day of class, students will receive a refund of their tuition/deposit minus a $25 processing fee and a $50 administration fee.
– For withdrawal after the start of the second day of class, students will receive 25% of their tuition/deposit.
– After the third day of class, there are NO refunds of their tuition/deposit.

Because of their lower price, most workshops are non-refundable, but we will consider refund requests on a case-by-case basis.
