AP Comedy: Youth Improv & Sketch @ TNM

AP Comedy

AP Comedy is the youth education branch of renowned comedy theater and training center The New Movement. TNM operates out of two locations - Austin and New Orleans - and through our in-school programming, out-of-school classes, mobile workshops, and summer camps, we seek to bring excellent improv arts education to as many young people as possible.

As our teen improv training program has grown, we're proud to announce that AP Comedy will now also include teaching kids the basics of sketch comedy and the basics of how to put together their very own sketch shows!

Our Fall 2015 AP Comedy Classes will take place every Saturday from 10am-12pm for 8 weeks (starting Sept. 26) @ TNM Austin (616 Lavaca St.)

Know a talented youth who belongs onstage? Have him/her hone their gift with our AP Comedy classes!

Questions? Contact our AP Comedy Department below.

In addition to having fun and trying new things, at the end of their 8-week classes, 10-12 young performers will form a team capable of pulling off a full improv or sketch show for family and friends at their recital, which will take place in front of a packed house on the mainstage at TNM!

In order to make our programming accessible to students of all income levels, we offer AP Comedy scholarships.

In the future, we hope these scholarships will be created in part with grant funding, but at our current stage, our scholarships are funded entirely out-of-pocket from the theater and by the generous donations of our supporters who think kids and comedy make a good combo. The cost of a full scholarship is $200, but you can donate anything you'd like. We're attempting to raise enough to offer six full scholarships, but we're happy with whatever you can afford to give.

Wanna help? Cool. Use the Eventbrite form above to throw some bucks in the hat. Let’s team up on this and make these kids feel like rock stars!

Roy LazorwitzRoy Lazorwitz

I'm Roy Lazorwitz! Born and raised in New Jersey and have always aspired to be a writer and performer. I've been writing sketches and movies since I was 11, even writing and directing my own play in the 8th grade. I moved to New York when I was 22 to pursue such a dream and while I may not have seen the success I dreamt of, I was able to write and produce a feature-length film and two shorts, and I wrote, directed, produced, and starred in a sketch variety show called "Anything On Tv With Jeff and Royster'' with my partner and best friend Redd Jefferson. I moved to Austin in January where I got involved with The New Movement and have since become a Producer and host of the weekly show Knockout! I also am part of the sketch group Stranger Party and am coordinator and teacher of the "Chamber St. Writers," a weekly writers workshop that focuses on character development.

Redd JeffersonRedd Jefferson

Hi, my name is Redd Jefferson.  I was born and raised in the loving bosom of Northern New Jersey.  I started performing mostly in community-based theater throughout my grade and high school years.  While I was attending college, I expounded my creative endeavors by taking a weekly radio host gig and some student film voice-over work.  After school, I took classes at Upright Citizens Brigade and started performing in comedy clubs and theaters throughout the Big Apple.  In the middle of all this, Roy Lazorwitz and I became best friends and partners. We created, wrote, and starred in our own variety show called "Anything On TV with Jeff and Royster" which opened for "The Chris Gethard Show" (Now on FusionTV).  After moving to Austin, I joined The New Movement, where I collaborate both on- and off-stage: writing, performing, audio tech-ing, as well as co-hosting and producing the theater's weekly cage match show, Knockout!
