Workshops w/Kevin McDonald @ TNM

Join Kevin McDonald (The Kids in the Hall) as Hell Yes Fest presents “Improv into Sketch w/ Kevin McDonald,” a two-day, 14-hour workshop to improve your acting and writing skills.  In a group of actors, you will learn how to write comedy through performance and using improv as a writing tool. And good news, TNMers – you can do this at either TNM Austin or TNM New Orleans!
The workshop will warm up with improv games to help sharpen storytelling skills, and evolve until students are doing their own improvised scenes in small groups.  Kevin will go from group to group, helping and guiding with the “writing” of each scene.  Each group will then have the opportunity to present their sketch.
After getting notes, revising and presenting the scenes again, the workshop will end with the groups going away and actually finalizing their scenes. The now fully-written scenes will be performed one last time for everyone.

This workshop will improve your acting and writing skills, and will teach you how both skills work in unison to create great scenes and hilarious comedy. And if you ask him, there’s a good chance Kevin will answer any questions about The Kids in the Hall. You might have to ask him to shut up.

The entire weekend workshop is $300. Reserve your spot now for $150. The spots will fill up fast!

NOLA Workshops (September 7th)

The Game of the Scene – $30 – 1pm – Open to all TNM students and alumni – 2 hours
Still struggling with game?  Need a refresher?  Want a different perspective?  This workshop will focus on helping you and your scene partners get on the same page about what’s funny in your scene and then how to heighten and explore that together.   An emphasis will be put on finding what’s funny and truthful in character behavior by exploring justification and point of view.  This workshop would be helpful both for people new to Game and experienced improvisers looking for a new perspective on it.

Great Acting and Improv Are Not Mutually Exclusive – $40 – 3:30pm – Master Class (level 3 and up) – 3 hours
For some reason some good actors start improvising and all knowledge of how human beings behave goes out the window.  They think that in order to do comedic improv they need to put on their “comedy voice” and skate by with over-the-top and detached performances.  Other improvisers are good at playing truthfully when the scene is casual but are not ready to jump into the full spectrum of emotions and physicality that their scene might require.  This workshop will combine acting and improv exercises to create improv that is not just funny but also honest and dynamic.

Introduction to the Harold – $40 – 3:30pm – Master Class (Level 3 and up) – 3 hours
You’ve probably heard about it.  Now it’s time to give it a shot. Learn Del Close’s original long form structure that is still at the core of the UCB training center program. The Harold takes this one workshop to learn and a lifetime to master.
