Negin Farsad-comic and Nerdcore Rising creator

In recent years, the phenomena of nerd rapping or “Nerdcore” has reached a terrifying high. Comics and infmaous lyricists such as our very own Terp 2 It, MC Chris, and MC Frontalot take much of that rap cake, and frequently perform at high-profile music festivals, such as SXSW. One comic has had her finger on the pulse of such rap happenings, and her name is Negin Farsad. Starting out with her stand-up, and then moving on to make her own movie about the arising art, Nerdcore Rising put a name to the craft, and soon made a name for herself when she displayed it at SXSW last year. Farsad is returning to the Lone Star State this year for SXSW to display her stand-up skills, and get involved with the comedy scene around Austin. Let’s get to know her!
First off, what is Nerdcore Rising?

Nerdcore Rising is a comedy about nerdcore hip hop which is essentially geeks rapping about geeky things like Dungeons & Dragons, video games, and algorythms for security encryption. It premiered at SXSW and since then I find all kinds of excuses to keep coming back.

Why are you at SXSW?

I’ll be jamming the IFC network’s airwaves with my FACE! I’m reporting on all things “information uber highway digital cloud space.” Audiences will watch as I predict the future of apps, computers, and the status update. I’ll also be hosting a talk at the IFC studios (March 13, 3pm) on comedians using twitter – much hilarity will possibly ensue. I’m assuming. I hope.

What projects have you been working on lately?

Outside of my work for IFC, I just wrapped up writing a cartoon series for PBS and I’m currently working on making my second films. Which is scary but must be done. Here’s a hint: it’s a comedy. And “love” might feature prominently in it.

What can you expect from this SXSW show?

You can expect some standup from me (which was my day job before I ever started making movies) and you can also expect an unnaturally talented group of Austinites masterfully executing some improv based on my standup.
